The Sound of DeBarge…
January 25, 2010

INTRODUCING ANDREW DEBARGE, SECOND GENERATION MULTI-TALENTED MUSICIAN, SINGER, AND SONGWRITER FROM THE MUSIC INDUSTRY’S DEBARGE FAMILY.

Andrew DeBarge is a second generation musician, singer and songwriter from the music industry’s DeBarge family. The sound of DeBarge is back for those who enjoyed the legendary pop/R&B/soul family from before and is brand new to younger listeners. The son of Tommy DeBarge, former bassist for Motown’s Switch and DeBarge, Andrew launches his career showcasing all his talents with “Catch Myself,” a dance tune that captures the spirit of his incredible forthcoming Lonely Road album.

Beginning with drums at age four, Andrew plays keyboards, lead and bass guitar, trumpet and cello. Andrew released his first album independently in 2008, which featured him on all instrumental tracks and vocals. In true DeBarge fashion, Andrew writes his own songs, capturing thoughts and feelings that tell a story. Andrew has had the opportunity to soak up the musical knowledge of his dad, Uncle Chico, Uncle James, Uncle El, and Uncle Marty in the studio and live on stage. His heritage can be heard in his vocal style, as well as Jimmy Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn in his guitar style, and Michael Jackson in his dance moves.

Andrew DeBarge is focused on his music and the message it carries. His songs speak of encouragement, a missing ingredient in today’s music. Andrew hopes to help rebuild the attitude of the world through his music.

Catch Myself, the single, is available on iTunes.

Lonely Road album underway…

DeBarge talks about “Lonely Road”

Andrew DeBarge is carrying on the family tradition: music.

Andrew spends his days in the studio recording and at home practicing his instruments, including his voice. “Talent is given but a craft has to be perfected with much practice,” says DeBarge.

My voice has changed somewhat over the past year. The “trademark DeBarge falsetto” has gotten stronger. I have more control over it. I play more instruments now, too, than when I recorded my first album, Your Place. I had released that one independently through CD Baby. I was just getting started then, spreading my wings and learning how to fly. Now, I understand my purpose a bit more. I’m doing things bigger this time.

My songs are written from my soul and relate to the condition of mankind as a whole. I write and sing songs that the world can enjoy forever, not just for the “now” time period. Timeless music – that’s the DeBarge way of songwriting.

Lonely Road is the current title of the album I’m working on. The title speaks for itself. This journey of life, when we’re serious about it, feels like no one is walking with us. That’s how I’ve often felt, like it was just me and my faith. Everyone feels like that at one time or another.

I’d say my favorite song on this project is Conqueror. The music is incredible and the lyrics are really important to me. They tell my story of rising above issues and pressure. I did it, so I want others to be encouraged they can do the same.

All the instruments are recorded live by me on this album. Instruments speak to us. Each one has its own identity, like a person. We have to play them. They comfort us and provoke certain feelings. Instruments are a big part of what’s missing in the world today. Musicians have been replaced by synthesizers and drum machines. The human voice has been masked by effects. It’s not right; it’s very wrong. It’s hurting us because we can’t feel anything anymore. Today’s music is like a huge pendulum swinging back and forth, back and forth, hypnotizing the world to think and act in a bad way.

Music is a cure for our hopelessness. It’s time that it comes back to its proper use. There’s a much bigger picture than how many people I can get to spend their money on me or how glamorous I can look on stage. This is a platform on which I stand to connect with the multitudes and say something that will help someone live a meaningful life. The message is love. Check out some photos from the studio!

Andrew DeBarge has Performed with DeBarge Legends
January 25, 2010

Regardless what breathtaking moments my career may bring me, the opportunity to have performed with my dad and uncles has been the highlight. I’ve had the privilege of soaking up knowledge from my dad, Uncle El, Uncle Marty, Uncle James, and Uncle Chico. My Uncle Bobby passed away in 1995, but he left me with the best vocal lessons ever just being able to listen to the fantastic songs he recorded with Switch, the family, and on his own. I count it a great honor to be born into a family of true musicians.
